Pikes Peak Hill Climb "unlimited" field goes deep in qualityPosted: 06/24/2011 01:00:00 AM MDT By nature, the fastest racers in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb — the second-oldest motorsports race in American — are also the gutsiest. It's why the anything-goes unlimited division draws the shortest field each year. Survival is always the first goal in navigating hairpin turns over thousand-foot drops over the side of a mountain. And yet, the five-deep division will be especially heated for Sunday's race near Cascade. Five-time defending champion and overall record-holder Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima will again be chased by last year's runner-up Paul Dallenbach and veteran Rhys Millen (whose father, Rod Millen , held the race record before Tajima). But two other challengers joined the unlimited field this year for the first time. Dave Carapetyan, who won the Pikes Peak Open division last year, joined the unlimited ranks this weekend. And Jean-Philippe Dayraut, the defending French national ice racing champion, will race Pikes Peak for the first time. "Pikes Peak is a project that is dear to my heart since my teenage years," Dayraut said in a release. "It is a very extreme human challenge, where we need to show adaptability. And it is the most important race in the USA after Indianapolis." There's no need to pass drivers at Pikes Peak, a time-trial style race over narrow roads to the summit. There are plenty of other challenges. Last year, Millen finished the final stretch on two tires and no fifth gear. "Road conditions change not within the hour, but within the minute," Millen said in an online video by HRE Wheels. "You can leave the start line at 90 degrees and five minutes later you can have a hailstorm, then five minutes after that you can have a snowstorm." Sunday's race will be the last on the current Pikes Peak setup. Next year, the road will be entirely paved, eliminating the challenge of an upper section on gravel. "The 90th Hill Climb will be quite different," race director Phil Layton told the Gazette of Colorado Springs this week. The 10-minute mark — for years the Golden goal for drivers at Pikes Peak — remains on the table. But drivers have only themselves to race. "Of course, I would be happy to break the 10-minute mark," Tajima said. "But my real challenge is to break my own course record. "That's my No. 1 goal." So, just in case you guys might be looking for something to do the weekend of June 26, there is always the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and we could be the fastest team this year. If you want to do this, the Pre-race Fan Fest in Colorado Springs Friday June 24 is a must! Last year 35,000 Race Fans attended to see our race cars and motorcycles, meet the racers, and see the insane extreme motorcycle jumpers’ exhibition. The legendary Malcolm Smith (On Any Sunday) competed last year on a MC.BTW, on race day, we start up the mountain at 6:00 am, and come down at sundown. Here is our vtr-equipped Entry: Our UNLIMITED DIVISION Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race Car driven by 6-time Winner Paul Dallenbach. We finished 2nd last year with our 600HP backup engine, and have a new 1100HP turbo-charged engine for this year’s event. The record for this Hill Climb now stands at 10:01, and we intend to be the FIRST to break the 10 Minute Barrier! Our main competitor is the current record holder, Tajima Nobuhiro from Tokyo. It’s time to bring the record back home!We have a better aero package and (we think) a better driver, and now, more power. He has 4 wheel drive and we have 2 wheel drive. All considered, we could very possibly have the EDGE this year. INTERESTED? Take a Dramamine, fasten your seatbelt, and WATCH the winning run last year from Tajima’s Car: http://www.usacracing.com/ppihc

Smart Product Valves Keep the Fuel Pressure Right For Champion APBA Top Hydroplanes One of the most technically sophisticated racing venues for hydroplanes is the APBA (American PowerBoat Association) US Titles Series / Capsule Hydros, 500CC, 700CC, and 1150CC (Top Hydro). These high tech professional racing outboard motors used in this series can generate well over 265 HP at 14,000 RPM out of a 700CC displacement engine! These are 2-stroke engines which run on racing grade methanol alcohol with a castor oil or a chemical oil mixed into the fuel, and a dash of nitro on occasion. The final product is a 14 foot aerodynamic racing hydroplane which flies just over the water surface on a cushion of dense air, and is capable of reaching straightaway speeds exceeding 120 MPH in 5-lap sprint races on a short 1 mile oval! The fastest engines in the world for this special breed of race boats are produced in small quantities by two competing Italian companies, Rossi and VRP. Even though these boats are raced all over Europe and the U.S., not many engines are needed for this sport because there are very few drivers capable of handling these high-powered rocket ships! The big challenge here is feeding 3 gallons of this fuel through four 38MM carburetors in less than 5 minutes without flooding the engine. This takes dead accurate fuel pressure control, with a very narrow operating pressure window. Fuel delivery pressure to the carburetors must be precisely maintained between 2 and 3 PSI. Many of the racing teams, including 13-Time National Champion and World Speed Record Holder Liquid Courage piloted by Sean McKean of Mabank Texas, rely on Smart Products to keep their fuel pressure in line. The engine crankcase provides the pressure source for the fuel tank by pumping up to 10 PSI of positive pressure generated through a check valve from an oscillating pressure-vacuum. This is accomplished with a # 304 Series Check Valve from Smart Products. At speed, this valve is opening and closing over 200 times per second! Pressure is maintained by using a # 118 Series Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) from Smart Products at the fuel tank. This PRV continuously bleeds off the over pressure to maintain the prescribed 2 – 3 PSI fuel tank pressure. There is absolutely NO ROOM FOR ERROR! If either valve fails, the boat will go dead in the water and fail to finish the race. Joe Flow Vapor Trail Racing
